EOS, Your Law Practice, and Clio

As Law Firm Technology experts, we have the privilege of observing a wide range of firms. Some are like well-oiled machines, with systems properly set up, security prioritized to protect their clients, and proactive communication with vendors for continuous improvement. Others, however, are stuck with outdated equipment and view security merely as a cost rather than a market requirement. This article aims to assist both types of law firms.

Having run the same business my partner and I started in college for 22 years, we’ve learned that communication is key to success. Whether it’s with employees, vendors, clients, family, friends, spouses, or children, effective communication is crucial.

Some firms we serve daily excel in communication, maintaining a cadence for meetings, action plans, and goals. How do they manage this with such busy schedules? They use a framework, whether it’s one they’ve created or a popular one like EOS.

The Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) is a comprehensive business framework designed to help leadership teams clarify their vision, gain traction through disciplined execution, and foster a healthy, cohesive team. It employs simple tools and principles—like the Vision/Traction Organizer, Level 10 Meetings, and Rocks—to align and strengthen every part of a business. EOS was created by Gino Wickman, who introduced the system in his book “Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business.”

We observed a common theme with the top law firms. Top-performing firms are using EOS, just like us at Stasmayer. They conduct L10 meetings, close our their to dos, and review their scorecards, which is what I want to discuss.

Law Practice Management systems like Clio can provide dashboard data for your scorecards, including utilization rates, realization rates, collection rates, billable hours, and more. The best-in-class law firms manage by metrics and use frameworks like EOS for accountability. For years, we’ve read the Clio Legal Trends report about the missing six hours, which is why I recommend adding EOS to your law firm or business.

If you have any questions regarding EOS and our experience with it, please feel free to reach out. We can recommend a great EOS Implementor and friend who helped us out.
